Australian Sheep Dogs (Shepherds) Breed Information

Australian Sheep Dogs, also called Shepherds, are a breed originally bred for sheep herding. They’re still put to work on ranches all around the world these days and they’re also beloved companion dogs who are among the most popular breeds in Australia. They are known as loyal, loving companions. This dog is of medium size and bone. The Australian Sheep Dog is also athletic and agile, so it is muscular and powerful enough to work all day. Its double coat is weather resistant. It is also keen, eager and intelligent.

Australian Sheep Dogs History

The Australian Sheep Dog is not really an Australian breed at all. It is called as such because it was imported to the US by way of Australia. There are many theories of the breed’s origins. One popular theory claims that when the Basque people from Europe settled in Australia in the 1800s, they brought with them their sheep and sheep dogs. Then, many of these shepherds moved to the western United States alongside their dogs and sheep. Americans naturally called these dogs Australian Sheep Dogs (or Shepherds) because as far as they were concerned, that’s where they came from.

In the rugged areas of Australia and western America shepherd dogs were in high demand, and through various breeding and selection processes, the Sheep Dogs were able to adapt and even excel under these harsh conditions. This dog is among the most versatile of breeds and it excels at obedience, herding, and even competitions where agility is key. The Australian Sheep Dog is also adept at working cattle, so they are useful for more than just herding sheep.

Their Temperament

The Australian Sheep Dog has a great deal of energy and it is a loving, confident and independent dog. It is also very smart, and responsive. If it doesn’t get enough chances to exercise and develop its mental as well as physical abilities, it is most likely to get frustrated. This in turn, will make it pretty difficult to live with the dog. With proper exercise and training however, this dog will become a loyal, devoted, and obedient companion. The Sheep Dog is careful when it comes to strangers and has a protective nature. They herd animals by nipping at their feet.

Ideal Environment for an Australian Sheep Dog

As mentioned before, Australian Sheep Dogs have a lot of energy and stamina so these busy dogs need space for exercises. This makes them feel they are right at home on a ranch. This however doesn’t mean they have to live on a farm. In fact, many of these dogs live in city apartments and they are quite happy. As long as they have access to plenty of puzzle feeders, games, and access to outdoor spaces to run around, they will be alright. 

It is important to make plans for at least an hour of daily exercise, and no, leisurely neighbourhood walks won’t be enough. Dog sports such as agility competitions and flyball are great ways to entertain your Australian Sheep Dog and this will in turn serve to strengthen your bond. If you have cats or kids at home, you should proceed with caution as even though these dogs can be amazing family dogs and usually get along well with other pets, they can also have a high herding instinct that leads to nipping at heels.

Grooming

The Australian Sheep Dog has a medium-length double coat that can be straight or wavy which can pick up debris while they’re running around. So, it’s a good idea to be prepared to do some combing. Generally, once or twice, weekly brushing sessions will keep their coat in good shape. Unless they’ve gotten extra dirty, they won’t need to bathe very often and regular brushing, nail clipping and teeth brushing is usually more than enough to keep them well groomed.
