Basic Guide For Feeding Puppies

Your puppy’s basic diet should be a high quality balanced premium puppy food. You must make sure this food is appropriate for their life stage and health status. You can check that it complies with the Australian Standard for the Manufacturing and Marketing of Pet Food AS 5812:2017 by checking the label on the food.
Natural food includes fresh human-grade raw meat such as diced up pieces of raw lamb, so you can also offer natural food to provide some variety. You should be careful not to feed too much raw meat off the bone while the pup is growing however, as this is very important in preventing certain nutritional deficiencies during growth. Natural food tends to include raw meaty bones. Make sure to always check with your vet first that raw bones are suitable for your particular Cavoodle puppy.

It is recommended to choose only human-grade raw meat and raw meaty bones. This is because some raw meat products that are marketed as pet food tend to contain preservatives to keep them looking fresh and these can be detrimental to your puppy’s health. There have been many recorded incidents linked to sulphite preservative-induced thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency, which can be fatal. You should also avoid sausages. Sausage and other cooked manufactured meat can also contain sulphite preservatives.

How Often Should You Feed Your Cavoodle Puppy?

Cavoodle puppies should be offered food at least 4 times a day to begin with. Then, you need to gradually reduce the number of meals as they grow. Adult dogs should be fed at least twice per day to help avoid bloat as this can be fatal.
It is very important not to underfeed or overfeed your puppy. Research indicates that overfeeding puppies can cause them to develop muscle and bone problems in the long run. Your veterinarian should be able to advise you on what and how much to feed your Cavoodle puppy.

What About Bones?
If your vet advises that it is alright to feed raw bones to your puppy, they should be introduced gradually. You must make sure the bone is large enough so that the puppy cannot fit the whole bone in its mouth or it whole. Dogs may crack their teeth on certain bones so avoid large marrow bones, T-bones, ‘chop’ bones, large knuckle bones or bones sawn lengthwise.

What Not to Feed Them
You must never ever feed the following substances to your Cavoodle as they are toxic to dogs (please do note that this list is not complete): alcohol, onions, onion powder, garlic, chocolate, coffee or caffeine products, mouldy or spoiled foods or compost, avocado, bread dough, yeast dough, grapes, raisins, sultanas, currants, nuts, fruit stones (e.g. mango seeds, apricot stones, avocado stones), fruit seeds, corncobs, green unripe tomatoes, mushrooms, cooked bones, small pieces of raw bone, fatty trimmings, fatty foods, salt, and roughly-cut vegetables.

Visit Your Vet Regularly
As always take your puppy to your vet regularly! They can weigh your pup, assess your pup’s body condition and provide appropriate advice.
