What to Feed a Cavoodle Puppy?
The Cavoodle is a very trendy dog breed and ranks in the top ten in Australia as one of the most popular crossbreeds. The Cavoodle is said to have been bred in the USA in the 1950’s by crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Miniature Poodle. This breed has excellent temperament, low to non-shedding coat (hypoallergenic) and an outgoing, affectionate nature and the breed was popularised with crossbreeding programs in Australia in the 1990’s thanks to these qualities.
The Basic Care Requirements of a Cavoodle Puppy
The basic care requirements for a Cavoodle puppy are not that different from any other dog breed. The Cavoodle is not a big dog and doesn’t possess a flat face or a long back. Like any other dog breed, the Cavoodle needs to be vaccinated when it is 6, 12 and 16 weeks old and from then on needs to receive a booster each year. Like any other dog they also need treatment for fleas and worms and separate products for each of these or a single product that treats all of them at the same time are available. It is best to use a “spot-on” treatment that is placed on the back of your dog’s neck when using these products to make sure they don’t harm themselves as they can’t lick the back of their necks. It is advised to avoid the use of flea collars as most are ineffective in controlling fleas. They also often cause many dogs to develop a skin reaction to the chemical sitting on their necks and unfortunately this won’t heal for quite some time.
In addition to all this, if you currently live in an area that has ticks or heartworms, preventative products are also available for both and should be used to protect your Cavoodle from these harmful parasites. You should of course always check the information provided on the label of the product you are using to ensure that it covers your Cavoodle for the parasites in question as well as being suitable for the age and size of your Cavoodle. If you are unsure of which product to use, you should consult the seller or ask your veterinarian when you take your Cavoodle for its first check.
Feeding Your Cavoodle Puppy
Most Cavoodles are not really picky when it comes to eating by their very nature but some individual dogs may be fussier than others. It is very important to stick to the same diet that your dog has already been eating as this will be very helpful in preventing gastric problems that can lead to more serious issues in young puppies. Due to this, it is a good idea to consult the Cavoodle breeder or the previous owner about what they have been feeding the puppy and how many meals per day they have been feeding it so that you can make sure your new dog is on the exact same diet.
The Cavoodles are a relatively small dog breed and they are generally cheap to feed as they are not really big eaters, so sticking with a premium dry food and feeding them small amounts will usually provide all the nutrition they require. Premium dry food is especially important for growing puppies as for an extra couple of dollars per week you can provide your Cavoodle with a complete and healthy diet. Low quality food will be inadequate when it comes to providing the nutrition a puppy needs. If your veterinarian ever recommends a different brand of food or an entirely different diet, a gradual change in its diet is the best way to do it in order to make the transition more comfortable for your Cavoodle.
How Much Do Cavoodle Puppies Eat?
Dog food is labelled for specific dog breeds, so it is always wise to check your dog food first. Cavoodles are classified as small dogs, so in general you need to buy food that’s marked for smaller dogs. However, a Cavoodle puppy needs special puppy food to ensure they are getting all the nutrients they require while they are growing up, so until your Cavoodle grows it is best to stick to puppy food. After your puppy grows up, you will need to switch to different food as your Cavoodle’s preferences will start changing in time. All in all though, a Cavoodle will never require large amounts of food even when it grows up.
